In standard single-stage tensioners, the target force is produced by a single piston; in a multi-stage design, the force is produced by multiple stacked piston stages. This makes it possible to achieve the same force in a shorter cylinder length — a particular advantage on connections with limited clearance above.
Both work on the same torque-free axial tensioning principle and can share the same 1500 bar hydraulic infrastructure (pump, hose, manifold). The difference is in the design: the HRT is single-stage/spring-return and covers a wide range from M20–M150; the HCK is multi-stage, covering a narrower M24–M64 range but with a more compact body. If clearance above is not limited, the HRT is generally the more economical choice.
